Predicting the severity of COVID-19 disease with Blood platelets size

Researchers suggest that the size of blood platelets can be used to predict the severity of disease and mortality caused by COVID-19.

According to researchers from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, parameters reflecting platelet size can be important indicators of activated circulating platelets, and patients with COVID-19 are at risk of clot enlargement.

The team tried to assess the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW) and Platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR) with disease severity and mortality in COVID-19 patients.

In these studies, 22 studies including 11,906 participants were studied.

Findings of the study showed that the severity of severe COVID-19 disease is associated with increased production of larger and younger platelets.

P-LCR tests performed during hospitalization can identify COVID-19patientsat high risk of thrombotic events and thus prevent prevention.

Platelets are typically small cells that contain coagulation granules that play a key role in both clotting and the immune response.
